In 1991, the night before Thanksgiving, I was in a motorcycle accident in Richmond, California. From the accident, I received two brain injuries and was in a coma for a week. One month after the accident, I left the hospital and went back to work. I have no memory of the accident and very few memories of being in the hospital.
It was, and is, an overwhelming event. It has completely changed my life. Not a day goes by that I'm not reminded of the event in some way or another. It's amazing, probably the most important event in my life (next to birth, I suppose) and I don't remember it. I've been told I was in a coma. I've been told I had two brain injuries. I've been told the doctors were shocked at my recovery. However, I don't remember it. I don't remember the accident. I don't remember being in the hospital. So, here's a life threatening event, that has greatly affected me, and when speaking with others about the accident I almost always, and almost immediately, get asked, "Were you wearing a helmet?"
